Nature Weaving

This fun and inexpensive activity makes the most of all the treasure hunting early spring has to offer! The simple looms are easy enough to make that older children may enjoy lending a hand, while even the youngest of bases will enjoy gathering nature treasures to weave.

What you’ll need:

  • Scraps of cardboard

  • Scissors

  • String, twine, yarn or rubber bands

  • Tape

  • An outdoor space to explore

To make your cardboard loom:

  1. Cut a scrap of cardboard into a small rectangle.

  2. Snip notches along each end, about ½” long and ½” apart.

  3. Wind your string, twine or thread around your cardboard through the notches, taping in place at the beginning and end. The string should be taut, but not so tight that it buckles the cardboard.

*No string on hand? Not to worry, rubber bands do the trick as well!

How to nature weave:

Using your cardboard loom, begin weaving your nature findings over and under the strings or rubber bands, from one side to the other. You can use anything small enough to fit in the loom – seed pods, grass, leaves, flowers, sticks, etc. Older children can create weavings by themselves; younger children may need some help starting out.
