Homemade Fruit Leather
Fruit leather is a great snack and making it at home is so easy, plus you can make it customized with whatever fruit that you love! Even though it’s pretty hands off, it does take some major oven time. So best to pick a day that you will be around the house, start it in the morning and by afternoon you’ll be rewarded!
What you’ll need:
3 Cups of fresh fruit (strawberries, apricots, peaches, plums, berries, pears)
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Agave syrup or honey (optional)
Spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)
To do:
Start by preheating the oven as low as it can go, making sure it’s no higher than 200F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat baking mat.
Wash and chop up the fruit, discarding any leafy parts or pits.
Taste the fruit to see how ripe it is - this will help you gauge whether a sweetener is needed.
Place the chopped fruit in a blender and puree until smooth. Add sweetener and spices, if desired and continue blending to combine.
Spread the fruit mixture onto the lined pan until smooth and bake it in the oven until it is no longer tacky to the touch. This can take anywhere from 2 - 4 hours.
Allow the fruit leather to cool completely before cutting into strips.
To store it rolled up, cut a strip of parchment paper to roll up with it so it doesn’t stick to itself.
Tips:
Put your oven at the lowest temp it can go! Anything 200 or below will work, but lower is definitely better.
You can use frozen fruit but be sure to thaw the fruit before measuring it.
Fruit leather will be completely done when it’s not tacky or gummy when cut.
Store the fruit leather at room temp, wrapped in plastic wrap and in an airtight container. It can keep for up to 2 weeks. You also can freeze it to keep it long-term. The best way is to wrap the pieces in plastic wrap and then store them in a large freezer ziplock bag in the freezer and will keep for up to a year.
