DIY Glass Magnets

These little glass magnets are so addictive to make, before you know it you will have plenty to cover your fridge or school locker. These also make awesome gifts for friends or family. So gather up your supplies and get crafting!

What you’ll need:

  • Mod Podge (glassy, matte or original) - school glue mixed with a little water is also a good substitute if you don’t have Modge Podge on hand

  • A variety of paper products for your backing - card stock, scrapbook paper, tissue paper, wrapping paper, foil paper and rice paper are all great options. Or more unique college items like magazines, book pages, maps, sheet music, etc.

  • Markers, pens and pencils

  • Large clear flat back glass marbles* (also known as glass gems, accent marbles/pebbles or vase fillers)

  • Small round ceramic magnets or magnet sheets/rolls

  • Hot glue gun and glue

  • Scissors

  • Holepunch

  • Paintbrush

    * These supplies can all be found on Amazon or your local craft or local dollar stores.

To do:

  1. Place the glass gems on your choice of paper and use a pen or pencil to trace around the glass gem. You can decorate the paper cutout with a little drawing, combine two or more different paper cutouts to make a mini collage or just leave them as is.

  2. Using scissors, cut out the shape you just traced, making sure to cut inside the line.

  3. Apply Modge Podge on the flat side of the gem with a paintbrush. Try to get a nice smooth and even layer across the gem so the paper will adhere well.

  4. Carefully place your cutouts onto the gem. Press firmly to remove any bubbles.

  5. Wait for 10-15 minutes to let it dry completely.

  6. After it is dry, use the hot glue gun to apply a small amount of glue to the back of the gem (where you pasted the paper) and adhere a magnet to it.

  7. Let the glue dry completely and it’s done!
