Musical Rainmakers

This simple project embodies everything we've discussed—it's process-focused, uses everyday materials, combines multiple senses, and creates opportunities for ongoing musical play.

You'll Need:

  • Empty paper towel tubes or toilet paper rolls

  • Aluminum foil

  • Rice, dried beans, or small pasta

  • Tape

  • Crayons, markers, or stickers for decorating

  • Construction paper (optional)

Make It:

  1. Let your child decorate the cardboard tube with crayons, markers, or stickers

  2. Help them cover one end with aluminum foil and secure with tape

  3. Pour a small amount of rice or beans into the tube (let them help measure and pour)

  4. Cover the other end with foil and tape securely

  5. Optional: wrap the whole tube in decorated construction paper

The Magic Happens

Your child has now created their own rainmaker instrument! Show them how tilting it slowly creates gentle rain sounds, while shaking it makes stormy weather. This craft combines fine motor skills, creativity, and musical exploration all in one activity.

Extension Ideas

  • Create a weather symphony using different rainmakers

  • Use the rainmaker during story time for sound effects

  • Make several with different materials inside to explore various sounds

  • Dance and move to the rhythms you create together
