Toilet Paper Roll Butterflies

This craft uses materials most people already have at home and can be adapted based on a child's age and abilities. Younger children might need more assistance with cutting and gluing, while older kids can get creative with wing designs and colors. The finished butterflies can be displayed on a windowsill or hung from string to create a spring-themed mobile!

Supplies:

  • Empty toilet paper rolls

  • Paint or markers

  • Craft paper or construction paper - colored or decorated

  • Pipe cleaners

  • Glue

  • Scissors

  • Googly eyes (optional)

To Make:

  1. Have children paint or color the toilet paper roll for the butterfly's body.

  2. While that dries, cut wing shapes from construction paper or tissue paper (you can pre-cut these for very young children).

  3. Have the children decorate or color their wings as they desire.

  4. Help children glue the wings onto the back of the toilet paper roll.

  5. Cut a pipe cleaner in half and bend each piece into a "V" shape for antennae.

  6. Poke two small holes in the top of the roll and insert the antennae, or glue on the inside of the toilet paper roll.

  7. Add googly eyes or draw eyes on the front of the roll, along with a face for your butterfly!
