Crystal Stars + Icicles

Kiddos will love the magic of watching crystals form overnight! Enjoy them in your windows or tree this winter season.

You Need:

  • 2 cups boiling water (per jar)

  • 1/2 cup borax (per jar)

  • 16 oz wide mouth glass jars

  • Spoon

  • Colored or metallic pipe cleaners

  • String or thin ribbon

  • Popsicle, craft sticks or chopsticks

  • Pencil and star shaped cookie cutter for shaping your pipe cleaners

To Make:

  1. Shape your pipe cleaners. Icicle: twirl your pipe cleaner around a pencil to form a spiral. Star: shape your pipe cleaner around the outside of the star cookie cutter connecting and snipping off any extra pipe cleaner.

  2. Tie a piece of ribbon or string from your icicle or star.

  3. Hang the string over a craft stick, and dangle your icicle or star inside the glass jars. You need to make sure the ornaments dangle freely without touching the bottom of the jar, the sides of the jar or each other.

  4. Mix together the borax and boiling water until the borax is completely dissolved.

  5. Pour the borax mixture into the glass jars until the tops of the icicle or stars are covered. The crystals will grow on the ribbon as well, so don’t fill the jars completely.

  6. Leave them overnight - about 24 hours is perfect for results! Once set, lay them out on a paper towel to dry.

  7. Enjoy their sparkle on the tree or windows this holiday season!
