Sea Life Rescue

This is a great activity to do outside on a hot summer day but equally as fun as an indoor activity. We love making up stories about our sea creatures and imagining we are underwater divers exploring the deep sea to rescue them.

What You’ll Need:

  • Freezer safe container(s)

  • Water

  • Blue food coloring (if desired)

  • Small plastic sea creatures and extra treasures such as pebbles or seashells

  • Salt

  • Droppers like these or even large spoons, medicine syringes or squeeze/spray bottles

  • Extras like metal spoons, forks, tongs, play hammers/screwdrivers are all fun additions to this play invitation

To do:

  1. Place sea creatures and other treasures into the freezer safe container(s).

  2. Fill with water and add a few drops of food dye, if desired.

  3. Place in the freezer until frozen solid (a few hours or overnight).

  4. Unmold and place in a bin or pan to contain the ice and water once it begins to melt, or take it outside in the grass or patio.

  5. Set up a jar of water and salt along with all of the other tools.

  6. Invite your little explorers to “rescue” the sea creatures using the water and salt to melt the ice and their tools to excavate!

Extra Fun:

Find out what melts the ice faster. Provide warm water and ice water for them to experiment with.

  • Try using different materials such as sugar or baking soda instead of salt, or vinegar in place of water to see how the ice reacts.

  • Pour the used water back into a container to reuse. This can be a great conversation starter about the water cycle with your little ones.
