By definition, play is to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose. But play is actually more than one singular activity — there are many things that would be considered play. For kids, there are different kinds of play: physical play can be running, jumping, dancing; imaginative play can be role-playing and story making; critical thinking and problem solving can be the use of puzzles and building blocks; language can be through jokes and singing.
The benefits of play are endless. Play encourages and stimulates emotional, social, motor and cognitive growth that children need during all stages of growth. Parents and caregivers should encourage all different types of play and be sure to build time into their children’s day that is designated to it. Play is never a waste of time! Play is essential in the brain development of a child, especially during their early years. These activities stimulate brain development and function. Each type of play corresponds to a certain part of the brain to grow as well as facilitate a child’s cognitive development.
Play gives kids the opportunity to have fun with peers, which helps in developing their social skills, language, and imagination. Kids get to interact and communicate with others, letting them share ideas, express feelings, and build friendships. During play, they get to learn how to socialize, know what the social and cultural rules are, and learn more about metal trial-and-error or knowing which information is relevant and irrelevant. Child’s play is not only for fun and games; it targets the needed development of children on different aspects of their well-being and living a healthy lifestyle.
By engaging in both indoors and outdoor play, children get the benefits of both. That is, they get to enjoy physical activity as well as creativity and mental stimulation. Creative play can happen in both environments. They provide endless stimulation for curious minds, and every day brings a new and creative play opportunity. Play comes in many forms, but it’s all valuable for childhood development and is essential for children to thrive.
