YOGA, baby. Yoga.
We’re so lucky to have so many of our sitters be conscious of health — physical, dietary, and mental — a value Napp shares. We often present new and engaging activities for our team to introduce to Littles to encourage unplugging from an iPad or tablet, maybe taking a break from Frozen, perhaps even suggesting a calm exercise to teach breathing, self-control, and something completely foreign into the day’s agenda.
Yoga, especially for kids, is a fantastic way to connect with Littles and the list of benefits according to Yoga Journal ‘s article titled “Teaching Yoga to Kids: Why Kids Need Yoga As Much As We Do” are endless. Feel free to read the full article here.
We can attest that our introduction of toddler yoga and yoga for Littles has been welcomed with open arms by the families we’ve been fortunate enough to serve. Feedback includes stories of how their child has spent less time in front of a screen, and more time trying to TEACH the parent really great stretching techniques, or exercises in breathing to “be happy.” MOVEMENT is so important. BREATHING is so important (I mean, come on). So why not marry the two into a fun activity with Littles when weather, a sniffle, mood, or time won’t allow for an expedition to the park?
Another benefit is that you’ll be doing Yoga as well. Yes, you. With free resources on the web, and even paid guided meditations and yoga sessions now readily available, you can bring the studio to you when you can’t make a class — and guess where your little will be? Not off turning the burners on, or setting fire to the curtains when you’re twisted into a pretzel and focusing on your chi, they’ll be with you. Right by your side. Watching, learning, copying, and feeling included in an activity each can continue for a lifetime if they wish.
We found this article to be fantastic. We loved that it showed us how inclusive this awesome activity can be if we just choose to open the door to the Little who is already peeking inside to see why their parent is sitting criss-cross apple sauce with their eyes closed.
Remember: Breathe, move, stretch, and celebrate with a hug to share a sense of accomplishment. None of this costs money. ALL of this is invaluable.
